Question:

iowanbabyblu49 has some porcelain dogs that she would like to find more about; ie. Value and maker. She has some photos here. They have serial numbers on them: 1A2066PY. Can you tell us more about the dogs?

Answer:

Dear Lowanbabyblu49,

Thank you for your question about your mother’s set of porcelain salt & pepper shakers. The issue of the maker and the value of the item are inter-related. Normally, porcelain items from well-known makers are stamped or otherwise branded with a Maker’s Mark. Not only is the Maker’s Mark critical in fixing a value, but it also aids in dating the item and establishing its country of origin. If your set is unmarked, it may be impossible to ever accurately identify the maker.

If this is the case, you will have to search for the pattern and see if you can match your pattern to one that has been identified. The library or bookstore may be your best bet although more and more information is on the Internet every day. While I was unable to locate an exact match of your item, a search of the Internet uncovered a set of “Collie” porcelain salt & pepper shakers selling for $19. Whether or not a Marker’s mark is found or whether a similar set is discovered online, only a qualified appraiser—examining the item first-hand—can establish the value of an item. To find a qualified appraiser in your area, it is advisable to contact the International Society of Appraisers (http://www.isa-appraisers.org/).
