Warlayirti Artists Aboriginal Corporation located at Wirrimanu (Balgo) in the southeastern Kimberley, Western Australia, is renowned for it’s a dynamic vibrant paintings. The art centre incorporates a large studio space adjoining a stunning gallery and represents approximately 200 artists from three communities in the Kutjungka region-Kururrungku (Billiluna), Mulan and Balgo. The artists are from diverse language groups such as Kukatja, Walmajarri, Jaru, Ngarti, Warlpiri and Pintupi. The diversity of cultural practice and bold use of colours clearly marks Warlayirti artist’s individual and unique style.
Early this year the community and the Art Center lost one of the most celebrated and respected senior artist, Lawman and Marpan, Tjumpo Tjapanangka. As a tribute to his life the Warlayirti Committee, staff, and the Nanala Family would like to announce the Tjumpo Tjapangka Art Award gifted to an individual who demonstrates strong cultural knowledge in the discipline of painting.
Over the past 18 months there has been a hive of activity at Warlayirti with the recommencement of painting by senior artist such as Brandy Tjungurrayi, Sarah Daniels, Nora Nangapa and Dora Mungkirna. The blossoming of young artists such as Pauline Sunfly, Christine Yukenbarri, Imelda Guguman Yukenbarri, Marie Mudegell, Patrick Smith, Mathew West, Graham Gordon, Vincent Nanala, Theresa Nowee, Lady Gordon and Tossie Baadjo. Also the commencement of painting by Boxers Milner son Frank Clancy and grandson Hanson Pye and the commencement of painting by Mavis Darkie Nancy Naninurra’s grandaughter.
In June of this year Dora Mungkirna a senior painter at Warlayirti won the 2007 David Blanasi Art Award sponsored by ANZ bank for her painting titled Honey Ant Dreaming. Christine Yukenbarri was nominated for the Xstrata Coal Prize in Brisbane, and Pauline Sunfly, Christine Yukenbarri and Nora Wompi were all been accepted into the NATSIAA Awards in Darwin.
This years print workshop located in Balgo with Northern Editions created a strong body of work that will be exhibited in Darwin at Charles Darwin University in August.
Much to the joy of the community the Culture Center has appointed a new Manager Veronica Wentworth who has been able to continue the interests of the community in cultural documentation in the mediums of photography, filming and production. This is providing a vital link between the generations.
Sally Clifford, Annette Cock and Anthony Spry are the current Director, Art Centre manager and assistant at the Art Center respectively. The Aboriginal Art Center is 100% owned by the artists on a remote Aboriginal community called BalgoT.
