| Approval | A sale through a dealer which allows a packet of stamps to be sent, and then unwanted stamps to be returned |
| Average (Avg) | The design of the stamp may touch the perforations, possibly on two sides |
| Cancellation | The marking (usually an ink stamp) used to process the letter/parcel once it has been received by the postal service, and to show that the stamp itself has been used and can not be re-used |
| Cinderella | A stamp-like label used for seals, bogus issues, revenue stamps, local post issues, etc. |
| Condition | The rating of all others factors of the condition of a stamp |
| Cover | A piece of postal stationery, folded letters that were mailed without an envelope, or a wrapper from a mailed parcel, that has a stamp affixed to it |
| Essay | The artwork for a particular design for a stamp (ie. the draft) |
| Extremely fine (EF) | The design of the stamp is perfect or nearly perfectly centred and the perforations are clear of any design |
| Face value | The value of the stamp that is printed on its face; the postal value of the stamp |
| Fair | The design of the stamp is cut considerably by the perforations, showing a significant imbalance of the print |
| Fine (F) | The design of the stamp is visibly off-centre on two sides, possibly touching the perforations or very near them |
| Fine-Very Fine (F-VF) | The design of the stamp is visibly off-centre, but still remains clear of perforations |
| First day | Refers to a cover that has a cancellation corresponding to the first day of issue of a particular stamp (ie. The first ever use of a Penny Black stamp) |
| Frame | The border of the image on the stamp |
| Grade | The rating of centring and cancellation of a stamp |
| Hinges | A triangular attachment that aids in putting the stamp in an album - like putting photos in an album, the 'hinge' goes on each corner of the stamp. Hinges can often lessen the value of the stamp, as it can leave marks or make the removal of a stamp from an album difficult |
| Imperforate | A side of the stamp that has a non-perforated (straight) edge, or imperfect perforations |
| Mint | A stamp that has not been used |
| Pane | The sheet of stamps can be divided into smaller panes of stamps |
| Perfin | Perforations made through the face/design of the stamp to discourage misuse or stealing of stamps by postal employees |
| Philately | The study of stamps |
| Postmark | Any official postal marking, usually in reference to a cancellation mark |
| Proof | A trial impression of a stamp design, used to check inking, colours, etc. |
| Sheet | A number of stamps on one sheet of paper |
| Unused | A stamp that has not been used, but has been affixed to an album with a hinge |
| Used | A stamp that has been used for postage |
| Very Fine (VF) | The design of the stamp is slightly off-centre on one side, overall well-balanced |
| Vignette | The image at the centre of the stamp |
| Watermark | A thinning of the paper to produce a semi-translucent pattern |
